The Stephen Phillips Memorial Scholarship Fund

The Stephen Phillips Memorial Scholarship Fund has been providing critical last-mile scholarships to young people in New England for many years. The small team makes for an amazing example of what deliberate continuous improvement can do for operational efficiency in the nonprofit sector. They have scaled their ability to manage scholarship awards beyond their original funder without adding staff and now award more than 2,000 students per year.

Their “accidental admin” used Framework to build all of the screens for their application process with only minimal assistance from the Deep Why team. This saved them several thousand dollars in consulting costs while giving them full ownership over the fields and presentation, and the knowledge to make in-house changes each year as their program evolves.

The SPS team uses Framework delivered through a Salesforce® Experience Cloud site to provide the full scholarship application - including a final review of all submitted fields - to new and returning applicants. They also have a portal for external readers who review and help select students and use Framework embedded into Lightning pages internally for staff to make final reviews and recommendations.

Applicant Routing

There are several types of applicants and new applicants must meet certain criteria to be allowed to apply. This page is fully Framework-delivered and helps screen applicants to route them correctly.

Applicant Bio/Demo Capture Screen

Once the application has been submitted, the applicant can return and review their data. This is a fully Framework-built page that was created entirely by the SPS team. Some data has been redacted for privacy.

File Requirements Review

This is a fully Framework-delivered page that wraps the underlying Salesforce® Content structure to present a clear and easy to use set of file upload requirements to the student. This page presents an example of our “reusable custom” approach - while this does require a programmer, we reuse our code snippets to extend Framework and keep costs down.

Review for Requirements

The SPS application is fairly extensive and has many required fields. This final page summarizes all of those fields and will not allow a final submit until all requirements are met. Another example of “reusable custom” code that extends Framework to allow for lower cost custom delivery.

The internal staff use Framework to review applications from inside of the Salesforce® experience. These side-by-side displays were designed and fully created by the internal administrators.
